I pulled off the exit and turned right onto La Cienega Boulevard. I glanced into my rearview mirror and my heart fluttered. Those pair of headlights looked familiar. They were particularly bright with a blue tinge to them. I’d seen them on the freeway and now the car they belonged to was behind me.

“Let’s see if I’m paranoid,” I said to the car in my rearview mirror.

I turned left on Pico Blvd. Then an immediate right into a smaller street.

I checked my mirror.

The blue headlights did the same. That couldn’t be a coincidence.

Sweat ran down my back as I increased my speed and made a sudden left turn onto another residential street and then another left into an alleyway.

I pulled in to the nearest empty carport and turned my engine off. I slipped out of my car, and keeping to the wall of the building, I positioned myself to watch the entrance of the alley.

A silver Lexus slowed at the mouth of the alley, but didn’t drive in. Instead, it drove slowly down the street, slowing down at each new street.

He was looking for my car.

Bastard.

I watched the Lexus take a left and disappear. I waited for a good half hour, barely breathing, my heart pounding. Had he given up or was he out there somewhere, waiting for me to make my move. I had to find another way home, one that wouldn’t take me back through the streets I’d come from. The streets he could be staking out, waiting to follow me home.

I slid into my car and mapped out a route I could take home. I sat and waited until the clock turned to 10pm. Only then did I pull out and take an alternative route home, my eyes searching for those blue headlights behind me. They never reappeared.
